[Composer's Note］

Fast and furious drumming is what this piece is about! After the initial explosion, an expansive and slowly shifting horizon comes into view at letter “C”. Players II & IV come out of nowhere taking care not to create a distinct beat - smooth and even 16th notes. Please be very careful of accent markings. Time signatures are marked, but letter “G” should be thought of as a big backbeat groove in 4/2. This piece is a mixture of many drumming styles, including Latin, African, Indian and Japanese. Of essential importance is your “group sound”. The soloists should play off and react to one another while the other performers keep an interlocking drive throughout. Let the time go out at letter “K”, flow with the big bouncing ball and let the transitions between measures 89-94 be smooth and seamless.
Be patient and do not crescendo from letters “L” through “P”, play the accents only. Bring it to a boil from letter “P” and then burn, sear and blaze to the end!

Note to Player III: Make the bass drum the central instrument in yourset-up. Place the bass drum batter head horizontal and with a slight tilt to get the head to face the audience.
