Ambient music, also known as environmental music, is characterized by subtle shifts in relatively quiet soundscapes. It is intended to enhance the atmosphere of a particular place or space. The term was popularized around 1975 by Brian Eno, who described it as “music that does not impose itself on the listener, but instead surrounds them, enveloping the listener in space and depth.”

Based on this concept, JPC categorizes instruments that create “sounds harmonizing with the environment” and “sounds that inspire calmness and a sense of meditation” as Ambient Instruments.
