Composer’s Comment
This piece was composed for and premiered at an ensemble concert by atTacca-Da, a group led by Mr. Ryo Takada.
It is a quartet (two marimbas, eight hands) in which each marimba is performed as a duet.
“IZAYOI” comes from the Japanese verb izayou, meaning “to hesitate” or “to waver.” The term originated from the idea that, compared to the full moon (Jugoya), the moon on the following night rises slightly later—as if hesitating to appear.
The piece begins with a mysterious, dreamlike atmosphere and develops into a set of variations based on a Japanese-style melody.
