[Composer’s Note]
This work avoids the use of keyboard percussion, with instrumentation kept as simple as possible. The opening rhythm serves as the main motif, appearing in different forms—expanded, contracted, and transformed—throughout the three contrasting movements.
I encourage performers not only to play the piece, but also to analyze its structure. Sound color is especially important here: by changing mallets, striking the rim or cup, or varying the touch, a single instrument can produce a wide spectrum of timbres.
