Staff Notes
-
The vibraphone parts demand strong fundamentals, especially in arpeggios. With fewer players, accuracy is crucial to maintain harmony.
-
Glockenspiel dynamics should be adjusted for overall balance rather than following the score markings rigidly.
-
Since two players share one vibraphone, careful damper (pedal) control is key.
-
Pay attention to silence—phrases should still “breathe” musically even during rests.
-
Xylophone passages require steady control to avoid rushing. Begin at a tempo suited to the most challenging repeated-note section.
-
Marimba II is easier with three mallets (two in the left hand recommended, depending on the player).
-
Players must be aware of each other’s rhythms to avoid collisions on shared instruments.
-
Some movements tend to drag in tempo; aim for a light, graceful approach while keeping the Japanese “color” atmosphere intact.
(These notes reflect our staff’s perspective. Please follow your instructor’s guidance for actual performance.)
Composer’s Comment
This suite is themed on colors—each piece reflects the image and movement of its respective shade.
-
There is no set order: start and end with your favorite colors, perform a selection, or even just one movement.
-
As long as the essence of the music remains, feel free to adapt the number of players or instruments.
-
All movements may be performed without Part IV.
