[Composer’s Note]
This piece was inspired by the “Ishiwarizakura” (Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree) in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, along with its history and legends.
(Located within the grounds of the Morioka District Court, just a 15-minute walk from Morioka Station.)
From the fissure of a massive granite boulder grows a magnificent cherry tree, over 360 years old, standing with an air of dignity. Unlike the dazzling beauty of cherry blossoms we often see, the Ishiwarizakura carries a quiet strength, having watched over centuries of change.
Many of my previous works themed on cherry blossoms—such as Yozakura, Kaen, Ōkagenbu, and Hana Kairō / Fūryū—were written with the image of cherry blossoms in the Kanto region, focusing strongly on the dramatic flurry of petals as they scatter. This time, however, I sought to capture the profound presence of the Ishiwarizakura.
Morioka endures long winters, where only the stone and tree remain amidst the snow. It is precisely because of this harsh stillness that the power of spring’s rebirth shines so brilliantly, with overwhelming vitality.
