Composer’s Comment
With this piece, the Flowers, Birds, Wind, and Moon series comes to a close.
“Garan” originally refers to a pure place for ascetic practice, and today it often refers to a Buddhist temple or its architectural layout. I wrote this piece while reflecting on the gathering of birds and the overlapping structures of temple buildings.
The latter half of the piece is inspired by the mythical bird Hōō (phoenix). While the English “phoenix” differs from the Eastern concept of the Hōō, I chose it as a translation to represent the idea of a sacred, legendary bird.
The work can be performed with just Players 1–3.
Players 4–8 may freely join in any number and combination.
Parts 7 and 8 may also be performed by a single player.
The piccolo is optional and can be added freely, for example, from within a percussion trio.
