A warm work by Hiroyuki Yamazawa, written in celebration of a wedding.
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Composer: Hiroyuki Yamazawa
Composer’s Comment
This piece was composed as a gift to celebrate the marriage of one of my percussion students.
It was written for three close friends—graduates of the same high school—who continue to perform together in a community ensemble. The idea was for them to be able to play it anytime and anywhere, such as at the wedding reception, using only a single 4-octave marimba.
(Optional percussion may be added, but even with that, all instruments should still fit into one car.)
The piece begins with a samba-like rhythm to celebrate this joyous new journey, and it unfolds through a series of musical landscapes.
There may be days when thoughts drift toward the sky over one’s distant hometown, yet the bond among friends will remain eternal.
If performance time is limited, shorten the sections before “A” by two measures each.
If further reduction is needed, cut measures 1–8 of section “B’” and begin from measure 9.
Player 3 performs from the opposite side of the instrument. Players 1 and 2 should also consider which mallets and keyboard positions to use so as not to interfere with one another.
For staging, positioning the marimba vertically toward the audience creates visually interesting movement.
(Each ensemble may decide whether to face the low or high end of the instrument toward the audience, depending on balance.)
Please turn imagination into creativity, and I look forward to hearing your unique and heartfelt performances.
The reference recording is the trio version.
(In the reference video, each player uses mallets from the Resta/Joffroy model series.)
Please note that we cannot accept returns or exchanges due to ordering errors.
