Hiroaki Kataoka

Yosuke Nomoto

Hiroyuki Yamazawa

Atsushi Tomita

The mallet stick shown is the model that the composer uses for ensemble performances, or the model that he often recommends during lessons. Recommended models will vary depending on the actual performer, instrument size, model, and ensemble balance. We do not necessarily guarantee that it is the best model for a composer's work.

Hiroaki Kataoka

Born in Iizuka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo College of Music in 2006. In 2007, he was selected for the Asahi Composition Award. The following year, 2008,Japan[Tenma no Michi] was selected as a required piece in a wind band competition. His orchestrations centered around percussion instruments have received high acclaim on overseas stages such as Midwest Clinic and WASBE. In addition to writing educational books, he also composes school songs, children's songs, and produces music for the bridal industry. In 2015 and 2018, CDs of collections of works were released by Brain Publishing. In 2021, he was ranked 2nd in the wind band competition composer ranking. He is attracting attention as one of the most performed composers in wind orchestra competitions in Taiwan. Lecturer at Tokyo Seitoku University. Music director of Kitakyushu Marimba Orchestra.

Representative work: Shishi Kagura ~For 4 percussionists~
≪Composer's comment≫
At shrine festivals, lion heads dance to the music, and prayers and exorcisms are held all over the country.
I myself was scared of the Shishi Kagura I saw when I was young.
JapanIt evokes a sense of nostalgia in people, and I think that image is etched in everyone's hearts.
Let's create the world of Shishi Kagura with four percussion players.

Comment from Mr. Kataoka

It's been 14 years since I debuted as a composer. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude for your continued patronage of my work. I have been involved in music as a percussionist, and just as there are trends in the mallet industry, there are trends in the mallet industry from time to time, and there is a wide range of models, from classic models that have been loved for a long time to more advanced models, and the possibilities of percussion instruments are unknown.

■ Marimba mallet

PLAYWOODTakaetsu Yoshioka Model M-1000 Series
I think there are many professionals who use it, but I would also recommend it to those who have just started playing musical instruments. Even if you have trouble controlling your wrist, the sound will not sink in due to the weight of your arm, allowing you to produce a bright and warm sound. The right weight when you hold it makes it comfortable to play and matches any song. The M-1001R and M-1002R are also compatible with self-composed songs such as Shishi Kagura and On a Beautiful Starry Night.

Encore Two Mallet Marimba Series
I would like to recommend it because of its delicate roll, supple hitting feel, and multi-purpose handling.
While it is excellent as a marimba mallet, it is also possible to create the tone you envision when you need to instantly perform smartly by changing the grip of the Wood Block or S.Cymb.

Resta-Jay Mallet Jean Geoffroy Series
This is a mallet that can be a special presence when you are looking for a soft tone.
The granularity of the sound is very clear from the lowest note to the highest note, and in chorale scenes, it is possible to play a tone with such transparency that you won't notice any seams between the sounds. Mallets are very popular among marinvisists, but even those who have just started playing musical instruments can find them extremely effective. Magic mallet! Isn't that the right word?

■ Chime mallet

Massimo Chime Mallet TORNADO Regular
In the past, chime was often used as the key point of a song. Now...
It can be said that the use of chimes has increased overwhelmingly over the past few years due to the demands of composers. As playing skills improve, there are many opportunities to play difficult passages, so I think that choosing a chime hammer is very important. Massimo's TORNADO can play fine 16th notes evenly and has a very smooth hitting feel. The stability of the grip and good balance are also outstanding.

Yosuke Nomoto

Born in Chiba Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Instrumental Music. To date, he has studied percussion with Jun Sugawara, Seimon Ariga, Tomoyuki Okada, Midori Takada, and Satoshi Ishiuchi, and musicology with Kaoru Koyama. Performed at Beppu Argerich Music Festival, Kitakyushu International Music Festival, Tokyo Spring Music Festival, etc. At the 16th International Music Day Concert (sponsored by the Chiba City Music Association), he performed as a soloist his self-composed concerto for percussion solo and wind orchestra, ``Celestial Trilogy''. The song is published by Foster Music. Received the 12th Chiba City Arts and Culture Newcomer Award. Many percussion ensemble pieces have been published by JPC (Komaki Musical Instruments). Currently, YomiuriJapanSymphony orchestra percussionist. Member of Yokohama Sinfonietta. Principal guest timpani player of the Ryukyu Philharmonic Orchestra. Lecturer at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music. http://www.yosukenomoto.com

Representative works: MIRA for percussion sextet and contrabass
《Author's comment》
This song is structured around the vibraphone, with various instruments intertwined and changing in a three-part format of rapid, slow, and sudden.
MIRA is a famous variable star located in the center of the constellation Cetus, and as its name suggests, it is a star whose luminosity (brightness) changes. The melody of the song will also change. Please feel free to add your own changes to make the piece even more enjoyable.

■ Timpani mallet

  • Regal Tip Soul Goodman Timpani Mallet No.5 605SG Ultra Staccato
You can get clear pronunciation without being too hard.
Good balance that can also be used for multi-percussion (Soldier's Story and Waning Moon).
*Currently not available in online shop

■ Snare drumstick

PLAYWOOD Signature Series Stick M-165TTY Tatsuya Ishikawa
PLAYWOOD Of course, I would like to recommend the Yosuke Nomoto model H-148YN, but I would like to choose the Tatsuya Ishikawa model M-165TTY (1mm thinner).
I love using it because the large tip gives a firm sound when playing not only snares but also deep and thick instruments such as toms and bongos, and it's short and light so it's easy to handle.

■ Marimba mallet

Yamaha Keiko Abe Signature Series
A mallet that sounds good. Overall, it's the best in terms of ease of acquisition, wide range of hardness gradations, and compatibility with instruments that are commonly found in schools.

■ Xylophone & Glockenmallet

Saito rubber head 100 series
No.101
Moderate hardness and lightness.
No.102
A celesta-like tone on the glockenspiel during severe weak playing on the xylophone (such as the second movement of Debussy's "Sea" or the middle part of Nomoto's work)

■ Glocken Mallet

PLAYWOOD Standard B series B-2
You'll want to have at least a pair of brass mallets in order to make the gorgeous sounds typical of glockenspiels.

PLAYWOOD Orchestra XG Series XG-35
A very cool mallet! It has an easy-to-handle handle and a wide range of tones, from sparkling sounds to smooth legato.

■ Vibraphone mallet

The number of people who own a variety of marimba mallets has increased.
However, I think that most of them have soft cores and windings to make the sound richer. The compatibility with metal instruments is also different, so I would like to have a little by little.

PLAYWOOD Jun Sugawara model M-3001~3

BALTER MALLTES BM-B22R,23R

■ Cymbal (vibraphone) mallet

VIC-FIRTH Terry Gibbs Model VIC-M32 (Medium Hard)
It is extremely compatible with not only vibraphone but also cymbals.
When you want to hear the sound clearly in a large orchestral or wind ensemble.

■ Triangle beater

PLAYWOOD OTB-107S
This is the biggest hit among all the drumsticks I've bought recently.
The thickness allows you to produce a lot of tones, and it has a very good balance of being thick but not too heavy.

■ Others

JPC multiplayer mallet

If a gong drumstick such as a small Thai gong is too heavy, use JPC5.
The lineup is amazing and fills everything you want.

Hiroyuki Yamazawa

Graduated from Senzoku Gakuen College of Music and Graduate School at the top of his class. 12thJapanClassical Music Competition Grand Prix (first for percussion instruments).
He has published numerous compositions for percussion ensemble, wind ensemble, marching, and string ensemble. In particular, percussion ensemble works such as ``Hana Corridor/Furyu'', which are the main published works, areJapanIt has been performed not only in Japan but also in countries around the world, including Taiwan, Europe, and the United States.
Head of the percussion group ``Otokogun.'' Bronze Prize at the 8th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition & Festa as percussion group "Otokogun".
Associate Professor, Department of Music, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Hiroshima Bunka Gakuen University. Assistant to the department head. Lecturer at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music and Graduate School.

Representative works: Cherry Blossom / Dragon
A song from the "Setsugekka Trilogy" by Mr. Yamazawa. The style is inspired by the season of cherry blossoms.
Reading: "Hanakairo Fuuryu"

■ Timpani mallet

  • Kaufmann Wien 104
*Currently not available in online shop

Playwood Mallet Shoichi Kubo Model PRO-1002, 1003
I like using it for percussion ensembles and wind bands because it gives a clear sense of pitch and a three-dimensional approach.

SIKA mallet Wood core model series
This series is used depending on the hardness when using symphonic instruments in orchestras and wind bands. Since you can choose the size of the core, you can be particular about the hardness.

■ Snare drumstick

Vic Firth American Custom Stick VIC-SD9/Driver
I've been using it since I was a student taking entrance exams, and I recommend it to my students as well. This is because it's a very honest stick that bounces back the things you can't do or aren't good at ``as is'' as a sound. I still continue to use this stick in basic practice. I think the balance of thickness is just right.

■ Marimba mallet

Yamaha Virtuoso Model especially MV-4030
Definitely recommended for scale practice and for those who have 4 scales for the first time. The mallet has a very wide range, so it's perfect for learning the basics of controlling tone with a mallet. Also, the price is reasonable, so if you are unsure, you can start with this series. I still use it for concerts as a professional player, so I think it will last a long time.
I often use the combination 4040-4030-4030-4020 with Ayabuki.
Also, the first half of Hanakairo/Furyu is written with this mallet in mind.

Resta-Jay Mallet Jean Geoffroy Series
This series is the one I mainly use when playing. I use it because I can play using the weight of the mallet itself, which makes it easy to produce deep, beautiful sounds that take advantage of the marimba's resonance. The hardness numbers are divided into quite small numbers, so it's fun to think about how to use them depending on the song.
In recent performances, I have used songs such as ``A lily blooms on a journey to the sky of one's hometown'', ``A river flows through a pine tree,'' and ``Until an oak grows its fruit.''

■ Xylophone mallet

PLAYWOODSawako Yasue Model XG-31
Ebony balls and wisteriaShaftIt has a rather large head. I use it when I want to make use of the character of "tree". It is also used when you want to make a melody resonate beautifully with a percussion ensemble.

  • Balter Mallets B92R
I bought it during the Mike Balter era, so I'm not too sure if it's the same as the current product, but I use it when I want a slightly sharper sound than the XG-31.
*Unfortunately, production has been completed and this item has been discontinued. No longer available in online shop
  • ENCORE 92R, 76R
I use the 92R when playing soft melodies in an ensemble, and the 76R for delicate expressions. It is also used for wooden percussion instruments (wood blocks, temple blocks, wooden gongs, etc.).
*Currently not available in online shop

■ Glocken Mallet

Playwood various glocken mallets
・Playwood Sawako Yasue model XG-34,35
・Playwood B-1,2,3
・Playwood XG-302
Basically, use this. In particular, the Glockenspiel in my songs often seeks for a ``beautiful sound of metal,'' so I would appreciate it if you could create the beautiful sound of ``metal x metal'' without fear. (If brass or aluminum is crushedYarnIt's the same as if it has come undone, so let's buy a new one.)

  • KOROGI UGH20, 22
Having said that, I've been using this recently when I play glockenspiel with a group of guys. The impression is that it has more pitch and sparkle than the XG34-35 (depending on the instrument and hall).
*Currently not available in online shop

■ Chime mallet

Massimo Mallets
I would like people who say, ``I'm not tall enough, so it's difficult to chime in,'' to know this. Unlike existing chime hammers, it can produce sounds using the same pronunciation method as mallets such as marimba, so it is very easy to use. I love it.

Representative work: Grand Anthem ~ for solo timpani and three percussionists
Jerry Glasstail: A quartet with no keyboard percussion instruments, mainly timpani.
The Grand Anthem / Jerry Grasstail
It is based on the folk song ``Yoheho Bushi,'' which is performed at the ``Yamaga Toro Festival'' in the author's hometown of Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The flickering lights of the lanterns gradually beckon you to a lively festival.

■ Timpani mallet

KATO B.K. (Kato Bachi Kobo/Kato Mallet) Grund tone series
Kato Bee needs no explanation. It goes without saying that the quality is high and the variety is abundant, but why not take your time and choose from the 6 basic types of Grund tones?

■ Snare drumstick

Beta VSMPW (Piccolo)/VSMPNW (Piccolino)
Above all, it is a stick that is well-balanced and versatile, so you should always have it with you.

PLAYWOODGS-145AS
PLAYWOOD Signature Series Stick GS-145AS Jun Sugawara
A masterpiece that allows you to experience the wide range of tones and expressions.

KMK Concert Stick KK-CSJ
This is a wonderful stick that is both delicate and powerful, and increases the fun of playing small drums all at once.

■ Marimba/vibraphone mallet

PLAYWOODM-3000 series
M-3001~3003 (purpleCotton ThreadVolume) brings out the high-quality tone of the vibraphone. The soft and deep rolls of the marimba are beautifully produced with M-3014 (3024).

  • SATO ST-MHA~MSB (cotton-wrapped series)
Ideal for playing suspended cymbals as well as vibraphone. It is also great for multi-percussion that uses many membrane instruments. It's quite useful.
*Currently not available in online shop

■ Xylophone/Glockenmallet

PLAYWOOD XB-9, 10
The classic xylophone mallet. Why not start looking for a mallet that suits you little by little from here?

Balter Mallets BM-BGL1〜3
A mallet that gives you the clear tone and soft resonance of a glockenspiel. Although not part of this series, the BM-BG6 (aluminum) from the Glocken series is also recommended for a wide range of uses.
