"Cut the screws directly on bamboo pattern" is back!

Due to the nature of bamboo material, the manufacturing method, which is difficult to process, is revived. At the beginning of the release of KATO.B.K Frannel Mallet, it was this method, but it was difficult to mass -produce and it was a model change to the current specification.
The screw -cut machine, which has increased accuracy than the previous machine, was recreated, and it was released as "DRESDNER TYPE".
By not interfering between the head material and the bamboo pattern, the pronunciation and the direct feeling transmitted to the hands are greatly improved.
We received comments about this new model from the creator Kato and the players who have already used it.

* This article was published in "JPC 166" published on October 10, 2020.

Traditional model
Dressdner Type

● Mr. Akihiro Kato comment

With Zonderman's shocking appearance, I came across a new type of Frannel. The initial model was screwed on a bamboo pattern, but it was changed to plastic material that was hard to break due to unstable strength. I thought with my friend's machine shop and tried a new machine, but I couldn't get a convincing machine and it was a long time. With a lot of thinking and talking, a good machine was finally completed, and I was able to revive the straight -cuts that many people had been waiting for.

I received comments from Timpani players with more than 5 Dressdner Type!

* Pron -title omitted, 50 alphabetical order

● NHK Symphony Orchestra Toru Uematsu

Prior the sound of the orchestra and point to the direction of the music ... that is the biggest role of Frannel Mallet. However, in exchange for the hard tone, the pitch was uncertain.
The Franner Mallet that the teacher Zondaman used when he was here, I remembered the beauty of the moment when the softness of the orchestra was sharp but could not be said to be sharp. 。
Finally, this "Dressdner Type" was able to meet the unforgettable sound again!
The strength and flexibility of the material itself, which is mixed with bamboo screw, leads to a simple, muddy and obedient tone. What a beautiful! !
We sincerely respect Kato's tremendous pursuit and technological innovation supported by Mr. Kato's tremendous music.

● NHK Symphony Orchestra Timpaniist Shoichi Kubo

The long -awaited new series released!
Is he already 30 years ago?
At that time, Dr. Peter Zonderman ( *) was a guest performance Timpanist on the NHK Symphony Orchestra (hereinafter N Hibiki), and Mr. Kato frequently plays the heavy responsibility of the busy Tokyo Philharmonic Timpanist. I was coming to listen. After the concert, I had a variety of hints about Mallet from the teacher around Zonderman (laughs). Not only general felt mallets, but also the long history of Frannel Mallet, Dr. Zondaman generously teaches Mr. Kato. The teacher's mallet was shorter patterns than the mallet we usually use, and the screws were cut directly on the bamboo pattern.
This DRESDNER TYPE has screwed bamboo directly with Kato -san's unique new technology based on the know -how obtained at that time. The player's sensation has been transmitted to the head more sensitive than the conventional Frannel, making it possible to express more direct sound. I think Kato's conclusion and comprehensive composition, who has been studying Frannel Mallet, which has been inherited in Europe since the 18th century, has been studied for many years. It is no exaggeration to say that it is a Zonderman model.

* Peter SONDERMANN (1920-1998) Born in Dresden. As a successor to the name Powcar H. Kunauer, who premiered many works of R. Strauss, he became a solo Timpanist of the Dresden National Orchestra at the end of the 1945 war. After retirement from the orchestra in 1986, he has been active in Japan until 1996 as N Sibi -visitor Timpanist. 2020 this year is 100 years of birth.

● Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra Timpaniist Yuki Sakamoto

From KATO.B.K., Dressdner Type, the name of the flannel mallet that cuts screws directly on bamboo as in the initial model, has been released. I myself used the initial model flannel, but this dresser model is evolving even more! Compared to the previous model, the sound loss is comfortable and the bee vibrates naturally!
There are three types of DFL, AFL, and LWFL lineup depending on the size of the head and the number of fabrics overlapping. Most bees can not be selected when they become hard, so this variation can be a delicate approach and is wonderful! I wrote the impressions I used if there were many types and would be lost ...!
The DFL series of Germany Frannel is 36mm, 34mm, 32mm, all of which are orthodox, well -balanced, and the overtones are wonderful. AFL series, this is a smaller number of fabrics that overlap by using a thicker fabric than DFL. The hardness is just between the three types of DFL. This two series has a rich sound, so it can be used for rolls! If you get lost, I think the above DFL series or AFL series is versatile.
The SFL-2807K, which has alternately overlapped with sam leather and wool, is a fairly hard drip, but has a great mobility. I think that it can be notable to be able to give a clear pitch even in the fine passage. LHFL-2614, which is the hardest in the lineup, has a hard and clear tone, of course, but you can easily play technical passages that tend to play with powerful skills using the clearing of pronunciation. One shot here is an excellent effect that can be played with the tone -oriented. LWFL
Leeds is a series that uses only Same leather, and I felt that the material was the most powerful in the series because the material has mass mass. I think that if you use it and get the Same leather, you will get a clearer pronunciation again.
The WFL series uses wool like a so -called Vienna -type flannel. The difference in the size of the cap can create a change in pronunciation as the balance of the bee changes little. GFL is a GFL that alternates with wool and cotton fabric, but I think it can be recommended for those who like the sound of wool. In my personal opinion, the sound was more than WFL. Isn't it very good for those who like the Vienna type?
Not all models, but I wrote what I felt about each model. Everything is wonderful and really recommended! The other day, I used DRESDNER TYPE at a concert, but I was able to express the sound I imagined as it was! It is surprising that the quality of professional use quality is on the market! Please experience Meister Kato's bee at this opportunity!

● Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra Captain Takuro Shiota

This flannel, which has been twisted directly on bamboo, has a clearer attack, improving the sense of pitch compared to the plastic and screwed model that I used so far, and it feels a very cohesive bee. Thanks to this, it has a reputation for being easy to listen to and to play, and it is very easy to listen to from orchestras. We use the large, medium and small of Frannel and the large, medium and small of the sam skin, but all are wonderful quality.
Regarding the flannel I used to use, I wanted a little more clear sound, I had to hit a lot to get the volume, and when I hit it, the sound was easy to break. Almost all problems have been improved. Thank you Kato!

● Tokyo Symphony Orchestra Timpaniist Kiyomizu

I am really happy to be able to use a directly screwed bee on the pattern that I have been waiting for for many years. "Frannel, which had been screwed directly by old KATO mallet bamboo", which was often talked about while talking about Mallet with senior Timpanists. Every time I heard the story, I was longing for the legendary Mallet.
I often use flannel in my usual performance activities, and I sometimes felt that the artificial material of plastic would inevitably mix hard and unnatural sounds.
The quality of Frannel, which has been screwed directly by the resurrected bamboo, is wonderful, and the quality is wonderful, up to the natural and clear sound, phrase feeling, and sense of pitch.
Specifications and sizes are diverse so that modern tomepani can respond to the fine nuances required for Timpani. What is particularly impressive is the Super Hard LHFL bee, which has a direct screwed pattern, so it has a lightness and sound enough as a wooden bee.
He usually talks to Akihiro Kato not only about bee but also about performances and music, and he is irreplaceable to his Timpani life. Listening to Akihiro Kato and Mr. Zey Garse, I was fascinated by dramas through music, Timpani, and Mallet, and I feel that the Timpanists are raised by bees.
This dragon was realized by the constant enthusiasm and quest of Akihiro Kato, a legendary and master who already lived, and I was impressed by the life that the seniors of life showed me. thank you.

What challenges did the manufacturing method for the KATO.B.K Frannel Mallet face due to the nature of bamboo, and how did these challenges lead to a model change for mass production?
