Description
The work is structured in three sections—fast, slow, fast—and is filled with the many charms of percussion ensemble.
LUNA is the name of the moon goddess in Roman mythology, and also a word meaning “the moon” itself. For Westerners, the moon is often seen as something that unsettles the mind (as in the tales of werewolves or the etymology of the word lunacy), and moon-viewing as practiced in Japan is not a common custom.
In composing this piece, I sought to capture the moon’s slightly “shadowy” image and the beauty of its soft, pale light.

* The piece can be performed on a single marimba. A 5-octave instrument starting from low C is recommended; however, if the lower range is not available, please raise the notes an octave or substitute with another low-pitched instrument as appropriate.
* If antique cymbals are unavailable, substitute with a glockenspiel or another high-pitched instrument.
* If all the specified cymbals are not available, you may substitute with cymbals you own, or perform with only one (or two) cymbals.
* Additional players may be added for the performance, including instruments other than percussion as substitutes.
