tucchie's Taiko Strange Story
Tutchi's "Taiko Kidan" Part 8 | Support with faces you'll want to brag about
*This article was published in "JPC No. 145" published in July 2015.
To all of you who read the JPC newsletter, this is Tutchi, the drum bearer you are familiar with every time.
This month, as usual, I would like to ask you to join me in this free and relaxed time.
Well, I'm currently writing this manuscript on May 29th, one day past the deadline for this manuscript, and I'm lazing around in a hotel room in front of Tosu Station in Saga Prefecture, as it's a travel day for a tour.
Even though it's only May, the weather in Tosu is like midsummer, and what's more, it's May 5th tomorrow. It seems that there will be a match between Sagan Tosu and Urawa Reds on the 30th, and I thought that soccer fans would be gathering in large numbers in the city of Tosu...I was completely relaxed by the atmosphere of the city and the tasteful appearance of Tosu Station, and I fell asleep on the bed in my room. I'm heading towards my MacBook as if I'm about to confuse myself, but I'm typing without any idea of what I'm going to write, and I'm almost reaching the limit of my attempts to gain word count lol.
Come to think of it, Drum Magazine's Tuning Department Z has its June issue, and we are happy to announce that the series has been completed. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all our readers for reading this issue.
I am very happy to know that some people are reading this together with the JPC newsletter.
Now that the Tuning Club has ended, I plan to continue the tradition of the Tuning Club (though there's no such thing) and write various Yota stories, so I hope everyone will continue to support me. m(_ _)m
Hmm, I've written 600 characters so far...I still have a long way to go lol
Let's write about my recent experiences.
Speaking of myself, recently I have been working with the young band Z’ led by Eikichi Yazawa. I'm juggling the tour with s (Zets) and the tour with Love Psychedelico, which celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, and in between, I was given the big role of helping former Happy End member Takashi Matsumoto return as a drummer. But I haven't lost any weight lol
Mr. Eikichi Yazawa is always really energetic, and he shows off his stage more powerful and sexy than the young people who are almost three years older than himself.
It's been 16 years since I've always watched the drummer's back, but I still get goosebumps many times during performances.
No matter how many times I watch the moment when he kicks off his trademark white microphone stand and makes a microphone turn, I always think, "That's so cool!"
Well, I really don't know when it will come. I understand that they say "Oh! I'm coming!" right before the song, but I don't understand what it means to say this place in this song. That voice and singing ability that attracts the audience with its thrill and value. A passionate, sweet, and heartrending world view woven together with various master lyricists from various eras. I think she's one of the few singers who can say that this is what makes her unique.
He is a rare melody maker.
I sincerely hope that you will continue to sing forever and ever. Also, the cohesiveness of the Yazawa tour crew, who has continued to protect the tour, is amazing. Safety management, cooperative system, speed, and completeness. It cannot be achieved without the strength of any one person. This is the same for any tour.
After working on various other jobs for a year, on the first day of rehearsals for this tour, we brought the equipment into the studio and set it up.On the morning of the first day, the crew met each other for the first time in a long time and said things like ``Welcome back~'' and ``I'm home~.''
For me, this is definitely my old home.
Along with this Z's tour, I will be participating in the Love Psychedelico tour for the first time, and this time it will be a special tour, with Yukihiro Takahashi as the drummer.
This is a great achievement.
This is the first time since Akiko Yano's "Granola Tour" that Yukihiro has toured around the country as a tour support drummer, and the first time in 28 years since 1987.
Taking this as an opportunity, I made a new drum set with gray smoke acrylic, and it produces a very tight and cool sound, which is really exciting.
Love Psychedelico's Naoki and Kumi love the Stones the most in the world, and the essence of classic rock such as the Beatles and Dire Straits is sprinkled in their works, and Kumi's native English and ennuiJapanThis is a truly luxurious tour, with Yukihiro's ``real'' beats intertwined with the cool mix of the lyrics of the song.
Well, it's really a groove like Charlie Watts or Ringo Starr. Secretly in my heart, I am grateful for this happiness of being able to enjoy the performance of the person I named ``Ringo Watts'' right behind me.
And Takashi Matsumoto.
AlreadyJapanEveryone knows that he is a representative lyricist. My favorites include Seiko Matsuda's The Secret Garden and Satoshi Terao's Ruby Ring. And above allJapanHe later became a drummer and lyricist for Happy End, a famous band that created the wabi-sabi of words and landscapes with words, and put the poetry into a sound directly connected to American and British ROCK in the late 1960s.JapanThe influence it had on pop music is immeasurable.
This project started with me acquiring Mr. Matsumoto's drum set, and the time I spent actually meeting him and talking with him was like a treasure to me. It's not over yet lol
``I'd like a drum just like Ringo,'' he said, so he acquired a Ruddick Black Oyster, took it to a studio in Tokyo, set it up, and tuned it.
Rather than trying to get a "sound from that time," I first bring out the best natural sound from the drums and give it to them, and then we talk about it and fine-tune it.
I was asked, ``Do you like THE BAND?'', and I immediately answered, ``Of course!'', ``Then, I like a sound like Levon Helm'', and then ``Oh, I'm sorry! Please wait a moment'', and so on, and when I told him, ``It's done~'', he played along to a Happy End CD in the studio. After spending a fulfilling few hours explaining the kick pattern for the famous song "Hana Ichimonme," he said to me, "Thank you for making such a great sound, and I look forward to working with you in the future," and I remember seeing him off with a heavenly feeling.
What's more, the leader of this project, who works between me and Takashi Matsumoto to coordinate schedules, is Toshiaki Hayashi, a former Huckleback drummer.
When things like this happen, I become a ``boy at the door,'' and I head to the site with a nervous but fun attitude, feeling like I'm helping out the big masters in every aspect of their work.
In March of this year, I was able to assist Tatsuo Hayashi as a tech for the Tokyo and Osaka performances of Hidefumi Ino, a wonderful musician who plays the Fender Rhodes electric piano. I feel dizzy writing it myself lol
There's something I always tell myself at times like this.
I don't say it often, or rather, I don't say it very often, but with a sense of self-discipline, I keep telling myself, ``Now is the best time. Be honest without being arrogant. Tomorrow, there may be nothing left.''
Being around great music all the time makes it second nature. That in itself cannot be denied.
However, it is the musicians who make this wonderful music. It's not me. I'm just involved as a craftsman at the edge of music.
But if that end goes bad, the house called music will tilt. This is absolutely not allowed. It's the worst. So I keep it in mind. "Don't get too conceited," he said.
Among my close friends, I said, ``Your snare is the best!JapanOne! ” or “Well, lol,” but what I mean by that is, “Please keep up your nice sound tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.” It's not just drum techs.
Guitars, bass, keyboards, sound staff, lighting staff, props, kites, etc. are all the same thing.
If your familiar soba restaurant suddenly turns bad, you probably won't go there, right? I want to know why it happened, but if it doesn't taste good, I won't go there. That's what it is.
I've only been talking about veterans, but I also work with young bands.
Recently, I recorded with a band called [Alexandros], played a live show, and even went to Taiwan.
I love this young quartet because their music is cool and the lyrics show a really nice scenery. When I'm with them, I feel like I've become younger, and I get to talk more about ROCK. This is a band that will continue to be active in the future!
The other one is ``Gesu no Kiwami no Otome''. The name of the band has a strong impact, but we are also good friends with [Alexandros], and this is a rare opportunity in my career to have a female drummer.
This is an interesting band with a danceable and slightly strange sound.
Other than that, there's a lot going on this year as well, such as that midsummer band's new album, with Takashi Murakami and I working on the same album, Gen Hoshino's recording, Diggy-Mo' (ex/SOUL' d OUT)'s solo tour, the annual Fuji Rock event, and World Happiness.
I am grateful to the God of music for giving me such a life where I can spend exciting times every time, filled with tension and excitement, wondering what kind of instruments I will come across and what kind of music I will play.
It kind of turned into a bragging story, but I guess it's okay once in a while lol
After all, it's a lineup you'll want to be proud of lol
But keep your spirits up. Just as I was thinking about taking care of my health and not overeating, I received an emergency call from a fellow crew member saying, ``Let's go eat the best udon in Tosu!'' So I decided to go out for dinner.
See you again on this paper!
It's getting hotter, so readers should take care of themselves.
With love, respect and gratitude.
